The amount of limescale formation varies as it depends on the water type and its quality, more limescale may accumulate with the use of mineral-rich water.

How often do you clean Zojirushi coffee maker?

  • Clean the carafe and basket/receptacle for the coffee after every use. Warm soapy water will do.
  • Clean the reservoir a couple of times a week. Mould, fungus, bacteria… etc… build up in standing water. Doesn’t matter how filtered or purified your water is, they are airborne.
  • Clean your coffee maker with vinegar, How often? About every thirty to fifty times you operate the machine. If you’re keeping the carafe, basket, and water reservoir clean, this should suffice. In our cafe that meant a regular Saturday ritual. At home, that means about once a month.
  • De-scalers. This is a bigger problem for some people because of their water source. We don’t have a scaling problem so my little container of descaler has lasted us a couple of years, but many people see scaly buildup relatively quickly.

Either get an in-sink water filter or get accustomed to applying a descaling solution regularly.

I use professional products but try DIY solutions if you prefer. A bit of prevention goes a long way, though. Filter your water or use bottled filtered water (not “mineral” water, for chrissake – the hint is in the word “mineral”) and you reduce scaling immensely.

What happens if you don’t clean and descale your Zojirushi coffee maker?

It will cake up with gunk, mostly calcium and lime, from the water. This can do several things:

1. It will build up inside the water tank if your machine has one, and could cause hot spots that can damage the tank.

2. It will build up in the heating coil (or around your heating coil) and can cause hot spots that will burn out the coil. And if can also restrict water flow through the coil.

3. It will build up in the tubing from the tank or coil to the drip head, and water won’t flow to the head properly.

4. In a machine with a pump like a coffee pod machine or coffee machine, it can damage the pump.

5. It can impart an off taste to the coffee.
