Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use regular ground coffee for cold brew?

Yes, you can use regular ground coffee for cold brew. In fact, many people prefer using regular ground coffee over coarser grind sizes for cold brew because it tends to produce a stronger and more concentrated flavor.

However, it’s important to note that using regular ground coffee may result in a cloudier brew with more sediment than using a coarser grind size. This is because finer grounds have a greater surface area, which can release more oils and fine particles into the water.

If you choose to use regular ground coffee for cold brew, it’s recommended to use a paper filter or a cheesecloth to strain out any sediment before drinking. Additionally, you may need to adjust the brewing time and ratio of coffee to water to achieve the desired strength and flavor.

Is coarse or fine ground coffee better for cold brew?

Mostly a matter of personal taste. How strong do you like your coffee?

The longer you steep your brew, the closer it gets to total extraction. So the same grind, overnight in the fridge is less strong than when left on the counter.

If you don’t want to leave it steep very long use a finer grind. I leave mine overnight, on the counter. I can use a pretty coarse grind and not effect the flavour that much.

Experiment, and you’ll find a solution that suits you.

Is it possible to over-steep cold brew coffee?

I’m going to say it is possible, but it would take a very long time because at that point staleness is the real issue, not over-steeping.

Typically, cold brew is brewed as a concentrate at room temperature, so the ratio of coffee to water is much higher (in some cases 1 part coffee to 4 parts water) and that ratio plus a long steep time is what allows you make a concentrate.

If you steep it for a very long time at room temperature, but not so long as it goes stale or the grounds go mouldy, you can get extremely interesting flavours coming through.

You’ll get lots of the origin of the bean, quite a bite more citrus than you might expect and it will be sweeter the longer you brew it.

If you steep it for that long, all you need to do is add less concentrate and more water to your final cup.

Final Though

Remember why you are doing this in the first place. You are trying to produce a beverage you can enjoy! It’s about ending up with a pleasant, delicious cup of coffee.

Keeping that in mind, Do not make the mistake many moderns do by trying to make things more complex than they need to be. Making cold brew is fundamentally simple in its process.
